- Given the national data on high principal turnover, explore
the issue in your district or state, and initiatives that may or
may not be working to retain principals.
- Follow a principal over a school year, particularly if the
school is undergoing a transformation, has a new principal in
charge, or is starting new initiatives. Spend as much time as
possible in the school with the principal and teachers, but also
be sure to speak to parents and students to hear their
perspectives.
- This is terribly wonky, but important: Examine the quality of
your state’s principal preparation, certification, and
license-renewal programs. Is your state considering
principal performance data when making decisions about licensing
programs? Is it using principal effectiveness data when renewing
individual principal’s licenses? What trends are you
noticing in your state’s preparation programs?
