About the Entry

The work entails shedding light on egregious acts committed against children by public employees, and the legal fight to obtain these records could set precedent and ensure continued access to records that give parents and the public a window into how school officials handle the most serious cases.

Comments from the Judges

“A powerful fight for transparency. Stories show the type of persistence required of great public-service journalism. Also a good example of journalists showing their work … allowing readers to see how the reporters are fighting for the public.”

“Voice of San Diego should be commended for their dogged reporting that uncovered in painstaking detail what school districts wanted to keep secret — that they protect predators.”

“An exemplary effort to pry documents from public officials, and use the contents and reporting to expose institutional and personal failures to protect students and hold bad actors responsible. Thanks.”
