In recent years, many books and learning materials that explore issues such as racism and LGBTQ+ matters have been challenged and banned in Texas public schools. A recent state law prohibiting the teaching of “critical race theory” and many bills targeting transgender youth appear to be sparking an uptick in community challenges of such works. This project will investigate the extent of censorship in Texas public schools and its impact on marginalized students.
