Child Labor a Reality in Hawaii Schools — Anywhere Else?

We published an op-ed today from a special education teacher here in Hawaii who said child labor is common in Hawaii schools.

That alone is shocking, but even more shocking are some of the comments on the piece: adults all over the state support this practice of having kids work in the cafeteria or on the school grounds to earn their keep.

My question for my fellow education reporters out there is this: Does this happen elsewhere? I had NEVER heard of it before, and yet most people here seem to accept it as a fact of life, while teachers are horrified that it encroaches on instructional time.
