New to the Beat Class of ‘21: Apply Now
EWA is accepting applications through Feb. 10 for
the New to the
Beat class of ‘21. New to the Beat, one of EWA’s
most popular training programs, offers rookie education
journalists a unique opportunity to sharpen their skills, connect
with peers and mentors, and develop deep knowledge of the
essentials of K-12 and higher education.
Full-time journalists with less than two years’ experience covering education are eligible to apply. Each rookie is paired with a mentor – an experienced education journalist. This year’s program kicks off with two afternoons of workshops in early March. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Feb. 10.
Attendance at the online training is required. The event will cover beat basics like making the most of open records, finding and using education research, and navigating education policy and politics. Participants will also learn how to use federal databases; and how to ramp up your writing and interviewing skills.
The mentorship program lasts six months. Rookies are required to produce a substantive piece of reporting that reflects their participation in the program. In addition to the mentorship and additional support from EWA’s public editor, participants will benefit from specialized programming, webinars, and resources geared to their needs.
