EWA Joins #GivingNewsday Amid COVID-19 for Global Day of Giving and Unity

The Education Writers Association, the nation’s professional membership organization for journalists covering education, is joining #GivingTuesdayNow to raise awareness of local journalism and to seek support for the cause of high-quality coverage of education by local news organizations. Local independent newsrooms play a vital role in helping communities be safe during the ongoing pandemic, yet have never been more imperiled economically.

#GivingNewsday is a campaign aligned with the #GivingTuesdayNow global day of giving on May 5, 2020, as an emergency response to a need accelerated by COVID-19. The day designed to drive an influx of generosity, citizen engagement, and philanthropy activation is a critical opportunity to support local nonprofit newsrooms and journalism nonprofit organizations around the country that play an essential role in protecting local communities.

“Journalists bring life-saving information to their communities every day,” said Caroline Hendrie, EWA’s executive director. “Learning how COVID-19 is affecting our world is critical, and we can only do that because of the hard work of journalists who are telling the story. Everyone at EWA remains committed to building up the community of education journalists at this difficult time and supporting their work to produce high-quality coverage of the crisis. EWA is proud to be at the forefront of addressing our members’ needs during this unprecedented period.”

EWA asks the education community to help us support local independent journalism as an essential community need. EWA also is appealing to funders who are interested in investing in quality public service journalism to support our work. Through collaborative support, EWA will be able to continue outstanding programming and adjust its business model to survive through this pandemic and thrive beyond it.

At a time when we are all experiencing the pandemic, generosity is what brings people of all races, faiths, and political views together across the globe. Generosity gives every individual the power to make a positive change in the lives of others and is a fundamental value anyone can act on at any time. It’s a day for everyone around the world to stand together and give back in all ways, no matter who or where they are.
