EWA Caucus on School Finance: An Online Reporting Community
School finance is a complex but critically important topic for education journalists to cover. Amid a mass influx of federal COVID-19 recovery aid, efforts to revamp state funding formulas, and other developments, the need is urgent for journalists to help the public make sense of education funding matters.
EWA is offering a unique opportunity for journalists to step up their game. We invite member journalists to apply to join a new online reporting community: the EWA Caucus on School Finance. Through monthly gatherings in 2022, participants will build their knowledge and skills to more effectively cover the topic, gaining insights from fellow journalists and national experts.
The Caucus also is a place to deepen ties among education reporters and network with like-minded peers who share a passion for the beat. It’s a forum to share ideas, troubleshoot together, and to get help in mapping out and executing coverage over time. Above all, the goal is to have participants come away inspired, informed, and with a portfolio of compelling coverage of K-12 funding.
We anticipate a group of approximately 20 to 30 journalists will participate in the program’s monthly, 75-minute online gatherings. In addition, there will be brief reading assignments and other activities between sessions.
This program is intended for journalists with experience covering education, preferably at least two years. (Those new to journalism and the education beat are encouraged to apply to our New to the Beat program.)
The deadline to apply is Jan. 12, 2022.
