Charlene Mendoza is passionate about education, equity and choice. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1995, she returned to her native Tucson, Ariz. and began working with charter schools. Mendoza served as a teacher and administrator for over 15 years at an “excelling” high school before becoming a founder of Arizona College Prep Academy. In addition to serving as the chief educational officer of ACPA, she is pursuing her doctorate at the University of Arizona in language, reading and culture, serves as a charter representative on the University of Arizona’s Professional Preparation Board and as a VIVA teacher leader. Mendoza has presented her original research at the Literacy Research Association conference and written blogs on education and educational policy for VIVA. Mendoza has served on the nonprofit boards of two local preschools and the Southern Arizona Association for the Education of Young Children. She is committed to creating a curriculum undergirded by sound theory, research and professional development that creates opportunity, empowerment and access to college to youth living in southern Arizona.
