Standards for Education Reporters is a set of voluntary guidelines that cover what education reporters should know and be able to do. The standards cover the knowledge and skills education writers should strive for, as well as conveying the ethical situations unique to the education beat. The standards book will be sent to every newsroom in the country and is available for free download as an Adobe Acrobat pdf file. Hard copies are available here for $12 each. Asking the Right Questions: EWA celebrates 60 years of education reporting with the release of Asking the Right Questions and getting feedback from leading journalists on how to approach the beat. Download the pdf version. Training for Reporters News to the Education Beat: Here is a helpful guide for new reporters on the education beat to learn more about important issues and topics ranging from standardized testing, special education and teacher quality. This guide was distributed at EWA's 2010 annual seminar in San Francisco. Download the pdf version. Covering the Education Beat is available. See the Table of Contents. If you're a member, you can go to our members-only site to look at it online. Also a Spanish version of portions of Covering the Education Beat are available as Cubriendo Sector de la Educacion. Public Schools, Private Markets: A Reporter's Guide to Privatization tackles the key elements of privatization, including charter schools, vouchers, for-profit education companies and state sponsored tutoring. The privatization book is available for a free download as an Adobe Acrobat file or can be ordered here for $12. Effective Superintendents, Effective Boards: Finding the Right Fit looks at the relationship between school boards and superintendents and how it affects student achievement. The report is available for free on the Web. Searching for a Superhero: Can Principals Do It All? is now available. You can download the pdf version for free. The 16-page special report looks at the shortage of principals and the role they should play in school reform. The Higher Ed Beat: EWA's survey of higher education reporters in 2002 showed that many sawcoverage of rising tuition and college finance as the top issues.You can download the pdf version for free. |
