American Educational Research Association

About Us

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is the nation’s largest professional organization devoted to the scientific study of education. Founded in 1916, AERA aims to advance knowledge about education, to encourage scholarly inquiry related to education, and to promote the use of research to improve education and serve the public good.

Our Members

AERA's more than 25,000 members are faculty, researchers, graduate students, and other professionals with expertise in education research. They work in a range of settings from universities and other academic institutions to research institutes, federal and state agencies, school systems, testing companies, and nonprofit organizations.

AERA’s 12 membership divisions reflect the wide range of expertise of its member scholars:

Members are also organized by nearly 160 “special interest groups,” based on their specific fields of study, teaching, or research.

AERA publishes six peer-reviewed journals, including Educational Researcher, which is available free online. We also publish prominent books on major educational research subjects. The recent titles include Prevention of Bullying in Schools, Colleges, and Universities, and the International Handbook of Research on Environmental Education. Our monthly newsletter, AERA Highlights, provides updates on AERA initiatives, federal public policy developments, and other news of interest to education researchers.
