FAQs

1. Can I send my payment for entry later?
We must have payment by Jan. 30 when the entries are turned over to the judges. If we have not received payment by then, your entry will not be forwarded to them. EWA Members - $25 or 2 for $40, Non-members - $45 or 2 for $70.

2. Does my entry have to be on 8.5 x 11 paper?
This doesn't apply to online entries. But if you are mailing your entries we need all entries presented on paper that can be easily copied. If cutting and pasting is too difficult or unreadable, print out an online version of your story or package. As long as an original accompanies it, it is acceptable.

3. What is the correct order to submit a contest entry?

This doesn't apply to online entires - just follow the instructions on the online site.

If mailing, please place your entry in the following order
Payment (Check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover number. Please do not type this information on the entry cover letter since that is forwarded to the judges and may be copied.)

  • Entry Form
  • Cover Letter
  • Entry

4. What is the latest date for accepting entries?
All entries must be postmarked or uploaded by 11:59 pm on January 25, 2010 to be eligible for entry. Any entries postmarked after the deadline will be returned unopened.

5. Does the entry have to come from the company I work for now? I want to submit something from a previous employer.
You can submit work from a previous place of employment as long as a majority of it was published/aired in the 2009 calendar year or the 2008-2009 school year.

6. Since the newspaper has an institutional account, can we pay the $25 per entry fee on all our entries?
No. If an EWA member is one of the applicants on an entry, then the fee is $25. But if no EWA member is listed, then the fee is $45.

7. Shouldn't there be separate awards for Beat Reporting for the different types of media?
We have had this category for a few years now and we think that there are more similarities between small circulation print and online media and small market broadcast entities than differences. The competition has been strong, so we are going to stick with this format for the time being.

8. Are the fees per article or per entry?
The payment is per entry, not per article.

9. I have a series that might be investigative. Should I hedge my bets and enter it into regular series instead?
No. It's not a strategy that works. The judges can move entries into another category if they feel the entry doesn't fit into the category they are judging -- and they often do.

10. Do you accept entries in languages other than English?
At this time, we can only accept entries written or broadcast in English. The board is considering adding categories for other languages in the future.

11. Can I enter a story in more than one category?
No, a story or stories cannot be entered in multiple categories, except stories entered in the beat category.
