National Awards for Education ReportingThe Education Writers Association is now accepting submissions for its annual National Awards for Education Reporting. Twenty-three first-place finishes are at stake, with each winner or set of winners receiving a $200 cash prize. First-place winners are eligible for the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting, which carries a cash award of $1,500. After reviewing the contest categories, FAQs and rules, create a username and password on our contest portal, follow the instructions, and upload your submissions. The deadline for submissions is 4:59 p.m. on Friday, February 1. All media are welcome to participate in the contest. So whether your work appeared in print or online, on TV or the radio, or all of the above, we’re eager to recognize excellence on the education beat. Participants of our previous contests will notice a few changes. We have created three new groups of categories, including one group for think tanks and advocacy organizations; another group for education-only news outlets; and a third for magazines and weeklies. We have also changed the way we organize outlets by looking at the size of newsrooms rather than circulation numbers or pageviews. Judges will select the winners in March and contest winners will be honored at our annual National Seminar May 2-4, held this year at Stanford University. The Grand Prize winner will be announced on May 4 during an awards luncheon. EWA – the only professional organization for members of the news media who specialize in education – has been recognizing distinguished journalism since the 1960s, furthering the association’s mission of increasing the quantity and quality of education coverage to create a better-informed public.
