Give to EWAAs a non-profit organization, we depend on your membership and your generosity. Won't you help us by making a tax-deductible donation to the 2009-10 Reporting on Education Fund? These are hard times in the media sector, as in other areas of the economy. While the news media have been struggling for years to find an alternative business model, the current market crash has threatened the very future existence of incisive reporting to the public. Even so, individual giving last year enabled EWA to double the scholarships we made available for education reporters to improve their craft and helped us start up webinars on timely education issues and podcasts. We hope you will help us this year as we continue to upgrade our online services and reach out to reporters and freelancers struggling to bring timely education news through new media. Knight Foundation, the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, and the McCormick Tribune Foundation, awarded EWA a $75,000 matching grant. Thanks to the generous support of members and supporters of high quality education - our heroes - EWA exceeded the match goal of $112,500 for the Challenge Fund for Journalism. You gave a total of $145,449, almost triple the amount given in EWA's previous high year! And with the match, a total of $220,449 enabled EWA to double the number of scholarships it made available in 2008-09 to reporters over the previous year so more than 200 reporters could attend trainings on teacher quality and compensation, retention and completion of first generation college attendees and students from underserved groups, understanding research and statistics and an early look at education in the Obama Administration. In addition, EWA started a new program of webinars and teleconferences so reporters could get the trainng they need at their desks. This was EWA's second Challenge Grant. Its first grant was $45,000, awarded in 2005, which the organization matched dollar for dollar with more than $50,000 from members and friends. These funds were used for scholarships, online services, and training programs in technology and new media.
