About EWA
The Education Writers Association is dedicated to improving the quality and quantity of education coverage to create a better-informed society. As the national professional organization of members of the media who specialize in education, EWA has worked for more than 60 years to help journalists get the story right. Today, EWA has more than 2,500 members benefiting from its high-quality training, information, and customized support.
The need for top-notch education coverage is more pressing than ever. While education currently enjoys unusual public prominence, the capacity of journalists to achieve excellence in covering it is under great strain. It is critical that education journalists have a professional community of colleagues that helps them tell stories that make a difference.
It is an exciting time for EWA members and supporters, as the organization works to reinterpret its mission with a new strategic direction that has broadened its base and enhanced its online resources. With new leadership in place, EWA has moved from a closed membership organization to a more inclusive community of media professionals. This community enables participants to connect, learn, and access customized, just-in-time support that results in more accurate and engaging coverage of education.
EWA has two types of members. Journalist members are working journalists from newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, and only-online news sites. Advocate members are researchers, public-information officers, and others interested in the way education is reported. Both categories of members enjoy benefits including access to EdMedia Commons; e-mail LISTSERVs; free or discounted seminars; members-only website access; resources to improve coverage; the Education Reporter e-newsletter; and, source lists, backgrounders, and other EWA publications free of charge.
EWA programs include in-person and virtual training events, some in collaboration with other organizations interested in high-quality education coverage. EWA’s flagship National Seminar brings together reporters, editors, bloggers, policymakers, scholars, advocates, and others for dozens of sessions aimed at building skills and knowledge about education from cradle to careers. The annual Higher Education Seminar focuses on coverage of postsecondary schooling. EWA’s public editor provides guidance and one-on-one reporting, writing, and editing support to hundreds of journalists each year. And EWA’s annual contest, the National Awards for Education Reporting, recognizes excellence in all types of media, including through the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize.
EWA is a nonprofit organization funded by grants from leading foundations, seminar sponsorships, and individual donations. Donors who give as little as $10 a month can become members of the EWA Honor Society, enjoying discounts and other benefits.
