New Slate of Officers Also Takes Helm

Washington, D.C. (June 29, 2011) — The National Education Writers Association is pleased to announce the election of a new slate of officers and the addition of three new members to its board of directors. The new board members are Felice Nudelman of The New York Times Company, Jonathan Schorr of the NewSchools Venture Fund, and Scott Widmeyer of Widmeyer Communications.

“We are thrilled to be adding such smart, accomplished members to our governing board,” said Stephanie Banchero, whose one-year term as board president began June 20. “In these challenging times for education journalism, EWA and its members will benefit tremendously from their deep experience, creativity, and strategic know-how.”

New Officers Selected

Ms. Banchero, national education reporter for The Wall Street Journal, leads a new slate of EWA officers who have begun one-year terms on the 13-member board of EWA, the nonprofit professional organization for the members of the media who specialize in education.

The other new officers are:

  • Scott Elliott, education reform reporter for The Indianapolis Star, as vice president/journalists;
  • Kent Fischer, vice president of GMMB, as vice president/advocates;
  • Kathryn Baron, reporter/blogger at Thoughts on Public Education, as board secretary; and
  • Dale Mezzacappa, contributing editor at the Philadelphia Public School Notebook, as immediate past president.

New Members Come Aboard

In addition to welcoming its new members, the board extended its thanks to three departing members who rendered exemplary service to EWA: former president Richard Whitmire, author and freelancer, and former vice presidents Rodney Ferguson of the Brunswick Group and Marie Groark of Get Schooled.
