Message From EWA's Director
EWA has published a new research brief for journalists on what
studies tell us about topics that arise often in the debate over teacher
effectiveness. The first of a series of EWA research briefs, the paper
tackles such timely questions as whether teachers are indeed the most
important factor in student achievement; whether value-added measures
are reliable; whether advanced degrees or merit pay make a difference;
and how students are affected by having several effective—or
ineffective—teachers in a row. The brief was written by EWA member
Stephen Sawchuk, who read more than 40 studies on the topic and
interviewed leading experts with different points of view. You can read it online or download the whole paper. Best of all, it’s free. Please give it a read and tell us what you think!

Save the Date: Fall 2011 Higher Education Seminar
EWA's next Higher Education Seminar will take place Nov. 4-5 at the
University of California, Los Angeles. Approximately 50 higher education
journalists will gather with dozens of newsmakers, scholars, and other
experts to explore a constellation of complex topics in higher education
today.
This event is made possible by a grant from the Lumina Foundation for Education. It is sponsored by Pearson and hosted by UCLA.
Contact Stephanie Cvetetic at scvetetic@ewa.org or 202.677.4271 for more information.
EWA Seeks Proposals to Host National Seminar
The National Education Writers Association (EWA) is seeking proposals
from research universities with a footprint in the education policy
landscape to host EWA's 2012 National Seminar. Hosting this annual
conference offers institutions a prime chance to make their mark in the
media by showcasing their education expertise in early-childhood, K-12,
and/or higher education before journalists from across the United States
and beyond.
Please send a proposal specifying dates when you would be able to
host the event to Caroline Hendrie, EWA’s executive director, at chendrie@ewa.org
by 5 p.m. EDT on June 27. The proposal may include additional
suggestions for ways your school and EWA could collaborate on the
conference. Please note if you would like to be considered for EWA’s
National Seminars in 2013 or 2014. If you have questions on the
proposal, please call 202-677-4260 and ask for Stephanie Cvetetic or email scvetetic@ewa.org.
Contest Winners Offer Tips, Advice
EWA is compiling tips from first-prize winners in the National Awards
for Education Reporting on the EdBeat blog. So far, we've highlighted
advice on covering the beat, investigating district mismanagement, and
following truants.
And if you're a first-prize winner who hasn't submitted any words of
wisdom, it's not too late! Email Stephanie Cvetetic with your item at scvetetic@ewa.org.
