Message From EWA's Director
I am delighted to announce two new additions to the EWA team. Kenneth Terrell, former managing editor for education at U.S. News and World Report, will join EWA in mid-June in the newly created position of project director, and Emily Richmond, education reporter for the Las Vegas Sun,
will come on board in mid-July as EWA’s new public editor. Emily will
offer customized reporting and writing help to education journalists
nationwide. In addition to one-on-one consultations, she’ll interact
with EWA members through the Educated Reporter blog, EWA’s LISTSERVs,
and EWA’s upcoming online community, EdMedia Commons. She’ll also help
develop programming for EWA seminars and other training activities,
working with Kenneth and other EWA staff and volunteers. Meanwhile,
Kenneth will draw on his background in higher education journalism to
organize EWA’s annual Higher Education Seminar and the postsecondary
track at EWA’s National Seminar. He’ll also play a significant role in
expanding EWA’s online resources for journalists. Please go to ewa.org for more information on these dynamic new members of the EWA team.

New Videos on Ed Beat
Thomas Bailey, director of the Community College Research Center and
the the National Center for Postsecondary Research, recently sat down
with Justin Snider, EWA member and Hechinger Report contributing editor,
to talk about differences between education standards in high school
and college, federal goals for post secondary education and the role of
community colleges in American higher education. You can watch a video
of their discussion here.
And in case you missed it, last week we published a three-part
interview with John Fremer, president of Caveon Test Security, about how
reporters can investigate suspicious patterns in their district's test
scores. You can watch that interview here.
EWA Seeks Proposals to Host National Seminar
The National Education Writers Association (EWA) is seeking proposals
from research universities with a footprint in the education policy
landscape to host EWA's 2012 National Seminar. Hosting this annual
conference offers institutions a prime chance to make their mark in the
media by showcasing their education expertise in early-childhood, K-12,
and/or higher education before journalists from across the United States
and beyond.
Please send a proposal specifying dates when you would be able to
host the event to Caroline Hendrie, EWA’s executive director, at chendrie@ewa.org
by 5 p.m. EDT on June 27. The proposal may include additional
suggestions for ways your school and EWA could collaborate on the
conference. Please note if you would like to be considered for EWA’s
National Seminars in 2013 or 2014. If you have questions on the
proposal, please call 202-677-4260 and ask for Stephanie Cvetetic or email scvetetic@ewa.org.
Fall 2011 Higher Education Seminar Sponsorship Opportunity
Approximately 50 higher education journalists will gather with dozens
of newsmakers, scholars, philanthropists and other experts at the Fall
2011 Higher Education Seminar. This well-respected event will
investigate a variety of complex topics in higher education today.
Be among a small and select group of supporters to connect with top
journalists in a salon-like setting at the nation’s leading training
event for reporters who cover higher education.
Contact Stephanie Cvetetic, Marketing and Development Coordinator, at scvetetic@ewa.org or 202.677.4271 for more information.
