Message From EWA's Director
Tomorrow a new paper comes out on where members of the public get
their education news and what they think of that information. Based on a
recent survey, the Brookings Institution paper is the latest in a
series examining the education-media landscape. Reporters can get an
embargoed copy from Christine Jacobs at cjacobs@brookings.edu.
You’re also invited to Brookings tomorrow afternoon for a discussion of
the survey results. Darrell West, Russ Whitehurst, and E.J. Dionne will
present highlights and commentary, and I’ll offer reaction along with
Amy Mitchell of the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism. You can
register or watch the webcast here. Hope to see you there!

National Seminar Coming April 7-9
We’re less than two weeks away from the EWA’s 64th National Seminar
in New Orleans! We're gathering some of the most interesting minds in
education and journalism for three days of site visits, story workshops,
and revealing discussions about education and how it is covered. Among
the newly added speakers is Alex Kotlowitz, award-winning author of There Are No Children Here and The Other Side of the River.
He’ll talk about his latest project as producer of a new documentary
chronicling the efforts of ex-gang members to stem the tide of violence
in one American city. We’ll also host U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan,
who will discuss federal-policy developments, and the presidents of the
two national teachers' unions, who will address controversies around
cost-cutting, teacher evaluation, and other contentious issues.
You can view our complete agenda here, and our full list of distinguished speakers here. We look forward to seeing you in New Orleans!
