Message From EWA's Director caroline hendrie

EWA's National Seminar in New Orleans is coming up fast, so sign up TODAY, when the early-bird registration discount ends. The main seminar is from early Thursday afternoon through the contest awards luncheon on Saturday. But we've got great programs for journalists who want to come early and stay late. Think of them like appetizers and dessert! We still have a few slots left for two of our site visits Thursday morning: one to an HBCU that is bouncing back after being walloped by Katrina, and the other to an early-learning center that works closely with local public schools. Right after the EWA seminar ends on Saturday, we're offering a free special program in collaboration with the American Educational Research Association. We've got travel subsidies available to cover the extra hotel costs on both Wednesday and Saturday nights. But you can't get them if you don't apply. So enough of the stalling and sign up now. (I'm saying that in my mother-of-three-procrastinators voice.)

See you in New Orleans!

Caroline Hendrie

EWA is seeking an accomplished journalist to fill the innovative position of EWA Public Editor. Among other duties, the public editor provides one-on-one coaching for reporters and editors by suggesting approaches to specific stories and projects; educating them on the issues; connecting them with reliable sources of information; helping think through approaches to the beat; assessing the value of research for journalists; evaluating reporters’ portfolios to help them improve; providing career advice; editing copy; and offering other customized assistance aimed at improving the quantity and quality of education coverage.

Please send a resume and cover letter spelling out your qualifications for the position to jobs@ewa.org.

Undercovered Issues on Teaching Examined

On February 18 in New York City, EWA hosted The Promise and Pitfalls of Improving the Teaching Profession, an event examining a range of issues affecting coverage of teacher quality.

The discussion at our daylong conference went beyond the commonly discussed topics of teacher pay and evaluation to ask: Is it feasible to make entry into the profession more competitive? Why is there often a large gap between what aspiring teachers learn in school and the skills they need in the classroom? And why do so few teachers feel they are getting the help they need to improve?

Catch up with session write-ups at the Ed Beat blog. We're also continuing to roll out podcasts from the main sessions at Ed Beat. The first two are up now, and a third will follow soon. You can stream them on the site or download them to your mp3 player of choice.

EWA is grateful to the Carnegie Corporation of New York for making this event possible.
