Message from EWA's Director
We're delighted to report the addition of a terrific new member to
the EWA team. Kim Clark, senior writer for U.S. News and World
Report, will be running our upcoming Higher Education Seminar, slated
for Feb. 4-5 at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. As she
undertakes this and other projects for EWA, Kim is eager for advice on
how to make the conference as productive as possible. So please send her
your ideas on training, speakers, or topics you'd like to see on the
agenda. Send thoughts to kclark@ewa.org. Or just write to say hi!

EWA National Seminar 2011
Recovery and Reform: Aiming for Excellence in Uncertain Times
As the nation strives to rebuild its recession-battered economy and
post-Katrina New Orleans comes back from the brink, the Education
Writers Association will convene in the Crescent City April 7-9 for its 64th National Seminar to assess progress on the push to improve America’s schools.
At a time when education is enjoying unusual public prominence,
attendees will learn how to overcome news-industry upheaval to tell
compelling stories about K-12, early-childhood, and higher education—on
multiple platforms and for different kinds of audiences. They will see
firsthand how far New Orleans has come since Katrina. And they will hear
from fellow journalists, researchers, policymakers, and other thought
leaders about where the broader national education conversation is
headed.
The three-day seminar will give reporters practical tools to develop
stories that matter. It will air debates over topics including teacher
performance, college accountability, international rankings, and the
overhaul of No Child Left Behind. It will take advantage of a concurrent
annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association to
bring journalists together with top researchers. And with post-Katrina
New Orleans now a hub of school choice, the conference will shed light
on why all students don’t yet have good educational choices—in the Big
Easy and across the nation.
In the coming months, we will announce the speakers and agenda, so watch our website for further information.
New EWA Resources
Help on Covering Education of Latinos
The New Journalism on Latino Children project recently held a
gathering in Chicago for researchers, policymakers, and journalists
titled "Illinois as Trailblazer: Bilingual and Dual-Language Learning."
Resources from the Nov. 16 conference are now available, including a
recap on EWA's Ed Beat blog.
EWA Unveils Backgrounder on Bullying Following
a rash of suicides around the country, especially after anti-gay
harassment, schools, school districts, reporters, and even federal
education officials are paying attention to the consequences of student
bullying. EWA offers some background information and links for
reporters.
EWA Offers Resource Guide on 'Superman' Documentary The
documentary "Waiting for 'Superman'" is helping shine a national
spotlight on the challenges of public education in the United States,
especially in urban communities. To help journalists cover the film and
its impact, the Education Writers Association has compiled a resource
guide of articles and reports on issues raised in the documentary, as
well as links to coverage and critiques of the movie.
