Message From EWA's Director
A few weeks back, Thomas Friedman said in his New York Times
column that if he were starting his career today, he’d make a beeline
to education. Yet while many agree with Friedman that education is
now “the epicenter of national security,” the supply of high-quality
coverage is not yet on pace with the nation’s pressing need for it.
Education media professionals are under attack from all sides in their
struggle to tell stories that truly matter. Amid these pressures, EWA
stands with them, providing the information, training, and contacts they
need to do the job right. So as you decide on which causes to support
this holiday season, please put a tax-deductible gift to EWA
at the top of your list. For just $10 a month, you can enjoy the
discounts and other benefits that come with being a member of the EWA
Honor Society.
Happy holidays!
Caroline Hendrie
Connect With EWA's Public Editor
In the last couple of weeks, Linda Perlstein, EWA's public editor,
has evaluated databases of student achievement data to suggest story
angles, helped editors at a national magazine think through approaches
to the PISA scores, connected journalists with experts and each other on
subjects of mutual interest, worked with a reporter to shape a think
piece on state policy, coached a new education reporter through school
visits, edited two op-eds, met with a reporter about a storytelling
challenge ... and more. Linda's available through the holidays and
beyond to help in any way you need.
Think of her as your free, extra editor—one who doesn't write your
evaluations or freeze your salary or assign you stories you wish you
didn't have to write. And editors, Linda is happy to help you too.
Contact her at lperlstein@ewa.org.
