Education beat reporter

The Montgomery Advertiser is looking for an experienced reporter to cover education

The Montgomery Advertiser is seeking an aggressive, seasoned reporter to cover education in Alabama's Capital City and surrounding areas.

We need someone with daily reporting experience, preferably covering K-12 or higher education. The tri-county area of Central Alabama has four public school districts plus numerous private schools. There are also several public and private colleges in the area. The demands are high; the readership rewards are great.

Skills should include outstanding reporting and writing, quick writing, quick turnaround on breaking news for the Web, ability to produce watchdog journalism projects, ability to read and interpret complex financial reports and write stories that help readers understand issues, Internet savvy and willingness to maintain an education blog. We need someone who, when writing about controversial topics, won't be afraid to ruffle feathers but can still get along with public officials.

This position requires extensive contact with the public to include various school board members, superintendents, teachers and other experts on education topics.

This position requires a Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism or a related field, and a minimum of five years of daily newspaper experience.

Please send cover letter, resume and up to five writing samples to:
