Education Writers Association Announces New Executive Director

Caroline W. Hendrie, a managing editor at Education Week, selected as the new executive director of EWA.
WASHINGTON (April 29, 2010) – For the first time in over two decades, the Education Writers Association (EWA) will have a new leader. The EWA Board of Directors announced on Thursday that it chose Caroline W. Hendrie, a managing editor at Education Week, as its new executive director.
As an education reporter and editor for the past two decades – with 14 years spent at Education Week – Hendrie brings directly relevant knowledge and expertise to her new role.
“She is the right person at the right time to assist us in charting a revised course for EWA,” said Rodney Ferguson, a member of EWA’s Board of Directors and chair of the search committee. “We are confident that Caroline has the insight and talent to guide our organization and its members in new and innovative ways to navigate and leverage the shifting media landscape.”
In addition to her work as an award-winning reporter, Hendrie also oversees the electronic and social media operations for Education Week, and spearheaded the integration of the publication’s print and online operations.
“I am eager to begin working with EWA’s members to build on our proud history as a champion of excellence in education writing,” said Hendrie. “Together, we will find new ways to carry out a mission that I believe has never been more important.”
Hendrie, who will assume her new position on June 1st, will succeed Lisa Walker, who is departing as EWA’s executive director after 24 years of service. During that time, Walker shepherded the organization from a dedicated band of education reporters with one annual meeting to a full-service organization with as many as 1,000 members, innovative programming throughout the year, and funding from more than a dozen major foundations.
Walker “has been a visionary leader who has helped EWA navigate profound changes in journalism and in education for more than two decades,” said Dale Mezzacappa, the president of EWA’s Board of Directors. “Her skills and hard work have left us well-positioned to move forward in an ever more challenging, and exciting, media environment."
Walker will stay through the end of June to help with the transition.

The Education Writers Association (EWA) is the national professional organization of education reporters. EWA was organized in 1947 by a group of newspaper reporters with the intent of improving education reporting to the public.
EWA has had as many as 1,000 members throughout the United States and Canada and continues to grow.
