DETROIT BUSINESSMAN ABNER MCWHORTER III LAUNCHES PERFECT ATTENDANCE SCHOLARSHIPS TO DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA AND THE CITY OF OAKLAND CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
Graduates can receive a $4,000 "Show Up to Blow Up" scholarship for perfect attendance.
Detroit, MI March 25, 2010 - Detroit businessman Abner McWhorter III is awarding scholarships to District of Columbia Public Schools and the Oakland Unified School District high school seniors who have achieved perfect attendance throughout high school. This is the first year that the scholarship opportunity has expanded nationally.
Mr. McWhorter, a 39 year-old Detroit Public Schools alumnus, initially established the "Show Up to Blow Up" scholarship in 2008 for Detroit Public School high school seniors. The $4,000 scholarship pays $1,000 per year for four years of college or trade school. The award aims to recognize students who have attended their high school classes every day. McWhorter applauds students who achieved perfect attendance records throughout their high school years and believes that the students who qualify have demonstrated the discipline necessary to be successful in life.
"Students are often recognized for good grades and top honors, but few are rewarded for one of the most basic building blocks of success showing up every single day," McWhorter said. "I want to honor that important accomplishment."
In addition, McWhorter stated that "absenteeism undermines student achievement, promotion, graduation, self-esteem and employment potential. Truancy has shown to have far-reaching and detrimental effects on students and presents a challenge to schools throughout the nation."
