Seven Reasons You Should Start Your New Year with EWA
Don't Miss These Events, Resources and Deadlines! Exploring President Obama's plan to increase college attainment and helping you to track your school district's stimulus dollars are just some of the programs the Education Writers Association has planned for you in 2010. Take advantage of these upcoming EWA events, deadlines, resources and announcements.
1. Tick, Tock-- Contest Deadline Approaching: You can enter EWA's National Awards for Education Reporting competition with a click of the mouse. For the first time, contest entries can be submitted online. This year's deadline is January 22, 2010. EWA awards top prizes in 19 different categories for news features, series, blogs, multimedia, online writing and best of the beat, including the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize. 2. Stimulus Tracker: EWA will launch a new website and database in the coming weeks tracking how local school districts spend federal stimulus money. Former San Antonio Express-News reporter Mc Nelly Torres, with Nirvi Shah (Miami Herald) and David Jesse (AnnArbor.com), is leading the effort to track stimulus spending, while Matt Waite and Chase Davis of Hot Type Consulting are working on developing a database. 3. Miles to Go: Join EWA in Washington DC, Feb. 19-20 for our higher ed seminar exploring the proposed changes to the student loan program and other measures to make college more affordable. 4. Bootcamp Announcement: Twenty journalists will be selected to participate in this year's EWA Research and Statistics Bootcamp. Reporters will soak up the sun and education research in Phoenix, Ariz., while attending sessions at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. EWA will release the name of fellows Monday on our listserv and website.
5. See Ya in San Francisco: EWA will hold its 63rd annual conference "Examining the Evidence," in San Francisco May 13-15. The conference will explore research supporting the U.S. Department of Education's "Race to the Top." 6. Need a Helping Hand? Don't forget to contact EWA's public editor Linda Perlstein for help with investigative reporting projects. Also, make sure you check out Linda's blog, The Educated Reporter. Linda is leading EWA's collaboration with IRE and the Student Press Law Center to help college journalists cover campus issues. 7. Spreading Your News: If you are trying to get your message out to reporters and other media, we have several ways to do it. EWA strongly encourages you to use our online system to post press releases because it is simple and quick. EWA does not send press releases to our membership, but you can purchase membership mailing labels.
