Higher Ed: Tightening the Belt, Expanding the Reach

Feb. 27-28, 2009 San Francisco

Colleges and universities must do more with less during a time of rising tuition, dwindling state appropriations and endowments, increasing enrollment and calls for greater accountability. There’s uncertainty at almost every turn from administrators, students, taxpayers and families. Is relief on the way or will the situation only get worse?

More than 30 reporters attended this two-day regional higher ed seminar at the San Francisco Chronicle. This seminar explored issues related to the economic crunch along with student achievement at community colleges and urban universities, the needs of Asian American students, the quality of online education and other topics.

Speakers included University of California President Mark Yudof; Sandy Baum, Senior Policy Analyst for the College Board; Patrick Callan, President of the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education; Kevin Carey, Research and Policy Manager at Education Sector; New York University Professor Robert Teranishi; and Inside Higher Ed Editor Scott Jaschik.
