Education Research and Statistics Bootcamp, Cambridge, MA
January 8-11, 2009
EWA selected 22 fellows to attend its 2009 Research and Statistics Bootcamp in Cambridge. See the names of fellows here. The next bootcamp will be held spring 2010 in California, please check again for next year's deadline.
Have you wanted to learn how to use an Excel spreadsheet so you can better analyze the dropout statistics in your school district? Or wanted to learn Access so you could do a more sophisticated analysis of teacher benefits? Or if you know those, how about learning how to run a regression analysis on test scores to better assess what schools do a better job teaching poor kids? Have you ever felt frustrated by the reams of ed research coming across your desk and whether that research was newsworthy?
The Education Writers Association is here to help you. Once a year, the professional organization for journalists who cover education offers a course in how to analyze data, as well as lessons from college professors on the strengths and weaknesses of testing and how to gauge good research from bad.
The conference runs from January 8-11 at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. EWA pays for three nights of hotel and most meals, as well as up to $250 for airfare, trainfare or mileage.
You bring the data. We help you sort it out. You leave with the beginnings of a story.
Check out the information here. If you are interested in applying to the bootcamp, download the entry form to apply. The class is limited to 20, so think hard about your topic!
