Teacher Quality Regional Seminar Followup

This EWA held a regional seminar on teacher quality that explored topical issues - from merit pay to teacher education. Held in Cleveland, it was hosted by EWA and the Cleveland Plain Dealer. To see the brochure, go here.To see the agenda, go here.
Arthur Levine, departed president of Columbia University's Teachers College, gave his first public comments on his three-year study of education schools that provides strong criticism and recommendations for reform.
Sharon Robinson, head of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, engaged Levine in a heated discussion about the controversial conclusions of the study. Read Robinson's official response to Levine's study. Arthur Wise, president of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), also published a response.
Following are organizations working to reform teacher education and links to stories about the report are below.
- Teachers for a New Era aims to develop state-of-the-art programs at schools of education by establishing three guiding principles as critical in the redesign of schools that prepare teachers. Eleven colleges and universities have been designated "Teachers for a New Era" institutions.
The conference began with a discussion about how reporters can adequately assess teachers. This led to an afternoon panel about teacher pay.
An evening panel discussed what it takes to make a good teacher.
