Message From EWA's Executive
Director
Happy New Year! As
2013 begins, it’s hard to imagine that for more than 65 years EWA has provided
support to you—our members. We believe that 2013 will be better than ever and I
wanted to point out just a few of the upcoming seminars and workshops available
to you.
- Under the Microscope: Examining STEM Education ,
Feb 8, Baltimore, Maryland
- Diving
Into Data 2013, Feb. 22-25, Austin, Texas
- EWA’s
66th Annual National Seminar, May 2-4, Palo Alto, California
Also,
don’t forget to enter the 2012 National Awards for Education Reporting. Recognition
for a job well done isn’t easy to find, especially in today’s challenging news
environment. Our annual contest, which honors exemplary education coverage in
all media, is a terrific way to earn a much-needed pat on the back—and a little
more cash for your wallet.
For more information on our programs, see below or go to EWA.org.
All the best,
Caroline Hendrie
P.S.
If you have any colleagues that would benefit from becoming a member of EWA,
please forward this newsletter to them.
Under the Microscope: Examining STEM Education
We have a few spots and travel subsidies still
available for our Feb 8 conference.
What will it take to get students interested in STEM
fields, and how do schools teach those subjects effectively? How can higher ed
encourage American students to pursue STEM when so many are inclined to switch
majors? On Feb. 8, EWA is offering an intensive one-day conference for
journalists on how to cover those critical questions and more. For more info
and to register, click here.
Diving Into Data
Workshop 2013, University of Texas at Austin
How well do your local schools prepare students for
college? Which teachers are leaving the classroom? Have federal school
improvement grants had any impact on your districts' lowest-performing schools?
These are some of the data-based questions journalists will explore at EWA’s
2nd “Diving Into Data” workshop Feb. 22-25 at the University of Texas at Austin
School of Journalism.
We are now accepting applications and those selected for
this coveted program will also have their hotel, travel and most meal costs
covered. For more info and to apply, click here.
