Message From EWA's Executive
Director
This Monday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. Eastern, reporters can get an advance look at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's
annual international compendium of national statistics measuring the
state of education worldwide.
Andreas Schleicher, OECD Deputy Director for Education, will talk to reporters about this year's Education at a Glance
report findings, which
include new indicators on early learning, educational inequality, and
the factors affecting the academic performance of
immigrant and low-income children. This major annual report provides
crucial context for all journalists drawing on international comparisons
for their coverage.
Embargoed copies of the report will be available to all who register. Click here for more details or to sign up.
All the best,
Caroline Hendrie
Ready to Teach: Rethinking Routes to the Classroom
How
well is America teaching its teachers? As accountability pressures on
the nation's teaching force mount, scrutiny of colleges of education is
intensifying as well.
During this one-day EWA seminar on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Minneapolis, journalists and
experts will delve into the growing efforts to revamp how aspiring
educators are prepared for the classroom and how teacher-preparation
programs are held accountable for results.
Reporters, editors, opinion
writers and other journalists are invited to apply for travel subsidies
to this EWA event, which will be hosted by the University of Minnesota
College of Education & Human Development at the McNamara Alumni Center in Minneapolis. You can RSVP today, and sign up for one of a limited number of travel subsidies. If you have questions about this event, please contact Lori Crouch.
Degrees vs. Debt: Making College More Affordable
How much should students have to pay to earn a postsecondary
degree? At EWA's 2012 Higher Education Seminar, you'll hear
from leading experts who will examine this question, which continues to vex students,
educators and policymakers. This journalists-only
event is hosted by the Indiana University School of Education and Indiana
University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
EWA will provide a limited
number of scholarships for reporters to attend the seminar. If you have questions about the seminar, please contact Kenneth Terrell.
What Common Core Means for ELL, Teachers and Tests: Join Us Sept. 28 in Los Angeles
EWA, UC Berkeley, Stanford's Understanding Language Initiative, and
Policy Analysis for California Education are partnering for a one-day
seminar to investigate how some states and urban districts are
translating common core proficiencies into new teaching practices and
more complex classroom activities. Space is limited, but a few seats remain. Click here to learn more.
