Message From EWA's Executive Director

So you’ve managed to get your hands on all the
records your school district keeps about its budget and spending. Now what? How
can you turn a giant data dump into a compelling story for your readers?
At EWA’s next webinar on Wednesday, July 18 at 1 p.m., you’ll hear how
reporters at the Dallas Morning News used public records to create databases of
district spending and budget information, and how they used those databases to
uncover everything from fraud and mismanagement to cozy vendor-employee
relationships to the misuse of federal grants.
Kent Fischer, a former DMN reporter who now works with the communications firm
GMMB, will give tips and advice on how reporters can collect and organize
spending records in ways that truly allow them to "follow the money."

Hit the Ground Running with Story Starters
One universal truth every journalist knows: You can never tell
what tomorrow’s assignment will bring. Maybe you’ve been a K-12 reporter for a
few years now, and your editor asks you to start covering the local community
college. Or you’re new to the ed beat, and you have to write about end-of-course
tests for the first time. How do you get up to speed? Where can you turn for a
quote?
For these questions and more, we’re proud to introduce Story
Starters, a new resource designed to help you get acquainted with unfamiliar
education topics. This free tool will introduce you to important reports
and research, point you toward sources and organizations that can help, and get
you started asking the questions that lead to great coverage. Today, Story
Starters features 24 topic areas broken into three main categories: Teaching
& Learning, Policy & Management and Higher
Education. We’ll add more topics and features in the future, and update the
ones we have regularly to reflect the ever-changing conversation around
education.
