Education Reporter/Analyst for Enterprise Journalism Team

The Deseret News seeks an enterprise reporter interested in joining a dynamic media company whose mission is to be a trusted voice of light and knowledge for a growing national audience focused on faith and family issues.

A successful candidate will produce enterprise stories about trends in education, providing readers with insight into research and teaching methods that are improving public and private K-12 schools, online education and higher education. The paper is particularly interested in a candidate who can synthesize how these trends affect its target audience.

The education reporter will write primarily for the Sunday edition of the Deseret News, one of the 10 fastest-growing newspapers in the nation. This edition reaches 135,000 subscribers.
Successful candidates will also aggregate and analyze Internet content for our digital audiences on national and international issues.

Job description

  • Produce two (2) strong, enterprising stories on an education issue each week
  • Produce three (3) web roundups of news coverage on education each week


Skills necessary

  • Writing that is thoughtful, enlightening, informative, rigorous, engaging and entertaining
  • Ability/willingness to develop stories beyond the routine--We are looking for someone who will ask more interesting questions, go beyond simple news releases and do thoughtful enterprise story development and research
  • Commitment to Deseret Media Companies mission and values
  • Journalism and/or other professional training in critical/analytical thinking
  • Ability/willingness to work with professionals to cultivate a beat in a way that develops mutual trust and respect
  • Ability/willingness to develop national sources who can provide trusted insight and perspective
  • Ability/willingness to take regular feedback and editing from multiple editors
  • Ability to write on deadline and take breaking news assignments on short notice
