Executive Editor of Scholastic Instructor Magazine

Scholastic is seeking a strong, curious, forward-thinking executive editor to guide Instructor, its flagship magazine for K8 teachers, as it continues to deliver vital, trusted content in print and strives to move forward digitally.

Key responsibilities:

  • Serve lead editorial role for Instructor magazine, acting as the face of the magazine
  • Plan, assign, and edit bimonthly issues of Instructor, including articles on teaching strategy, trends in education, and child behavior, and sections covering crafts, career, and grade-by-grade activities
  • Develop long-range plans for the magazine, including editorial calendars, special reports, and any redesigns
  • Help to grow the circulation of Instructor through the creation of the most compelling content for educators
  • Supervise and stay within editorial budget
  • Understand the unique needs and challenges of the teacher audience
  • Work with creative director, art director, and managing editor to meet editorial and budgetary goals
  • Collaborate with sales team on client initiatives connected to Instructor and initiatives related to education
  • Post regularly to Scholastic Teachers Facebook page
  • Coordinate updates to scholastic.com/instructor
  • Survey magazine readership on a regular basis
  • Represent the magazine at educational conferences and events
  • Develop brand-derivative products (apps, videos, professional books, blog posts)

Requirements:

  • 7-10 years of editorial experience in consumer or B2B magazines
  • Strong familiarity with education (teaching experience a plus)
  • Leadership in spearheading/developing an editorial brand
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Strong understanding of marketing and digital marketing platforms
  • Flexibility in a variety of editorial platforms (print, Web, apps, etc.)
  • Fluent in publishing software, such as InDesign
  • Experience creating and updating Web pages through content management systems (Drupal, Teamsite)
  • Ability to travel to schools, education trade shows, and sponsors throughout the country
  • Social media experience (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest)
  • Flexible and able to prioritize responsibilities as program demands shift
