Message From EWA's Director
Few people go into journalism to crunch numbers, but dealing with data is a
crucial part of the education beat. If you’re interested in become your
newsroom’s statistics expert – or if you just want to put your district’s test
scores into the most relevant context – EWA is here for you.
We have two great training opportunities coming up for
reporters who are tired of flinching at spreadsheets and line graphs. The first
is Friday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. Eastern time,
when we’ll host our next webinar, Do
the Math: Outsmarting Statistics. Holly Hacker, statistics guru
and education reporter for the Dallas Morning News, will show you the basics
for understanding how to effectively report on statistics. This fast-paced session
is a great introduction to stats-based journalism. Space is limited, so
register in advance by clicking here.
If you want to go deeper, take a look at Diving Into
Data, our March 9-12 workshop at
the University of Colorado Denver. This intensive training will give you the
tools to produce thought-provoking, data-based reporting. The deadline
to apply is 5 p.m. on Jan. 26.
Hope to see you there!
