Message From EWA's Director caroline hendrie

Recognition for a job well done is not always easy to find, especially in today’s challenging media climate.  While high-quality education coverage is its own reward, hard-working journalists still need an occasional pat on the back.

So you’ll be glad to hear that EWA’s annual reporting contest is officially open for entries. Don’t sell yourself short: Check out the new contest categories and frequently asked questions. Contact Stephanie Cvetetic with questions or for additional information

All the best,

Caroline Hendrie

Ask EWA's Research Roundtable

Faced with a constant flow of new studies piling up in their inboxes, reporters may be tempted to write off all education research as a waste of time. But next time you’re ready to hit the delete button, think again. EWA has assembled a panel of leading researchers to help you separate the wheat from the chaff.

The 12 scholars of EWA’s Research Roundtable—who hail from think tanks, regional laboratories, and top universities—will review upcoming studies and offer reporters guidance on covering them. The panel will also help EWA develop briefs for journalists on what studies say on hot topics in education.

The week of Dec. 5, the panel will join us on EdMedia Commons to answer questions, including these:

  • Journalists receive so many reports, briefs and white papers. How can they sort good research from the bad?
  • How can journalists tell if changes being touted in a report are statistically significant?
  • Can a study conducted in one location apply to another?

We hope you’ll come up with lots more questions when you come join us next week on EMC

Please contact Lori Crouch at lcrouch@ewa.org for additional information.

EMC Content Update

All this week and next, we'll be putting up videos from our November seminars on higher education and teacher evaluation on EdMedia Commons. If you couldn't make it to UCLA or Chicago, log into EMC to catch up on what you missed. Click here to see a full list of videos posted so far.

EWA's 65th National Seminar

Learning From Leaders: What Works for Stories and Schools will take place May 17-19, 2012, in Philadelphia. An estimated 250 reporters, authors, producers, editors, researchers, bloggers, and others will gather for three days of in-depth discussions, site visits, newsmaker speeches, and interactive workshops on education and its coverage. Winners of the National Awards for Education Reporting will be honored at the event, and the winner of the contest's grand prize will be announced. EWA's flagship conference is being co-hosted by the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education and the American Educational Research Association. As ever, the event will be tailored to meet the unique needs and interests of journalists who cover education at all levels.

Stay tuned for agenda and registration details in the coming weeks. For sponsorship and advertisement opportunities, please contact Stephanie Cvetetic at scvetetic@ewa.org.
