Message From EWA's Director
States love to brag when their SAT scores go up, and are quick to offer
reasons why they went down. How can reporters see through the spin and
put their states in context?
If you want to learn how, be sure to join EWA at 1 p.m. on Nov. 9 for Behind the Numbers: What the SAT Scores Really Say. This webinar, which is offered at no cost to EWA members, features Holly Hacker,
education reporter and stats guru at the Dallas Morning News.
She'll explain some basic statistical concepts using state SAT scores
and share insights into what drives changes in those results. For
learning how to effectively and fairly compare your state with others,
this is a can't-miss event. And while the webinar will focus on the SAT,
the techniques discussed are applicable to many other education issues.
If you want to take part, click here to sign up.
Hope you can join us!

EWA's 65th National Seminar
Learning From Leaders: What Works for Stories and Schools will take place May 17-19, 2012, in Philadelphia. An estimated 250
reporters, authors, producers, editors, researchers, bloggers, and
others will gather for three days of in-depth discussions, site visits,
newsmaker speeches, and interactive workshops on education and its
coverage. Winners of the National Awards for Education Reporting will be
honored at the event, and the winner of the contest's grand prize will
be announced. EWA's flagship conference is being co-hosted by the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate
School of Education and the American Educational
Research Association. As ever, the event will be tailored to meet the unique needs and interests
of journalists who cover education at all levels.
Stay tuned for agenda
and registration details in the coming weeks. For sponsorship and advertisement
opportunities, please contact Stephanie Cvetetic at scvetetic@ewa.org.

Latino Ed Beat
To help journalists cover issues affecting Latino children and their schooling, we have just launched Latino Ed Beat, a new website that will serve as a continuously updated resource on young Latinos at every grade level.
New content is being added constantly, but the site is already packed
with information to help you broaden your reporting. Some of the
features include:
•A blog offering guidance on covering Latino children from toddlers to teens •Reports on demographics and schooling, English-language learners, and early education, among other topics •Links to important research studies •News stories from around the country A
Spanish-language section is also in the works. If you have suggestions
about anything you’d like to see on the site, or if you’d like to give
us feedback, email Lori Crouch at lcrouch@ewa.org.
