Message From EWA's Director caroline hendrie

EWA is offering two webinars next week on topics making waves in education circles. On Monday, Oct. 24, we’ll present Smarter Principals, Better Teachers, a discussion of the link between principal training and better performance by teachers and their students. While the focus these days is often on teachers – and how to make them better – principals are a critical element of the student-achievement equation. The webinar will feature four high-octane presenters, and we'll leave time for reporters to ask questions. Click here to register.

On the very next day, Tuesday, Oct. 25, we’ll present Teacher Evaluations: A State-by-State Overview and Lessons From Early Adopters. This webinar comes ahead of the National Council on Teacher Quality’s new report examining teacher evaluation models in 15 states; registrants will be given access to the embargoed report. Sandi Jacobs, NCTQ vice president, will present the report's conclusions. Jane Hannaway, a vice president of the American Institutes of Research and director of the National Center for Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Education Research, will then respond to the report. Click here to register.

EWA is asking that registration for both events be limited to working journalists. I hope you'll join us!

All the best,

Caroline Hendrie

EWA Seminar Opportunity: Evaluating Teachers, Beyond the Rhetoric

On Nov. 12 in Chicago, we are gathering some of the nation’s top education thinkers and journalists for a daylong conversation on teacher evaluation models—looking at what’s happening at the local, state and national levels. The idea is to provide journalists with new perspectives on the rapid changes in policy and practice that are occurring in this consequential and contentious area.

The conference will take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the University of Chicago. To be considered for a fellowship for this event, please fill out our brief online application by Tuesday, October 25th. We will notify participants of their acceptance ASAP.

This seminar is for journalists only.

EWA's 65th National Seminar

Learning From Leaders: What Works for Stories and Schools will take place May 17-19, 2012, in Philadelphia. An estimated 250 reporters, authors, producers, editors, researchers, bloggers, and others will gather for three days of in-depth discussions, site visits, newsmaker speeches, and interactive workshops on education and its coverage. Winners of the National Awards for Education Reporting will be honored at the event, and the winner of the contest's grand prize will be announced. EWA's flagship conference is being co-hosted by the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education and the American Educational Research Association. As ever, the event will be tailored to meet the unique needs and interests of journalists who cover education at all levels.

Stay tuned for agenda and registration details in the coming weeks. For sponsorship and advertisement opportunities, please contact Stephanie Cvetetic at scvetetic@ewa.org.
