Message From EWA's Director

One of the most interesting sessions at or 64th National Seminar focused on America’s standing among world education systems. What lessons can US education policymakers draw from other countries, and how can journalists put comparative statistics in their appropriate context? In an increasingly global education climate, these are questions of profound importance.

Our presenter was Dr. Andreas Schleicher, head of the Indicators and Analysis Division at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Directorate for Education, and he will revisit this topic on Monday, Sept. 12 at an 11 a.m. web press conference for reporters co-hosted by EWA and OECD. The occasion is the release of OECD’s annual Education at a Glance report, which is set for release on Sept. 13 (registrants will receive an embargoed copy on the morning of the web conference).

Education at a Glance is the leading international compendium of comparable national statistics on education (if you’re unfamiliar with the report, you can view last year’s here). This year, the report focuses on how the global economic crisis affects the employment outlook for workers at various levels of education. Dr. Schleicher’s presentation will focus on the study’s findings for the United States and Canada.

Fall 2011 Higher Education Seminar

EWA's next Higher Education Seminar will take place November 4-5 at the University of California, Los Angeles. Approximately 50 higher education journalists will gather with dozens of newsmakers, scholars, and other experts to explore a constellation of complex topics in higher education today.

2012 National Seminar

EWA's 65th National Seminar will take place May 17-19, 2012, in Philadelphia. An estimated 250 reporters, authors, producers, editors, researchers, bloggers, and others will gather for three days of in-depth discussions, site visits, newsmaker speeches, and interactive workshops on education and its coverage. Winners of the National Awards for Education Reporting will be honored at the event, and the winner of the contest's grand prize will be announced. EWA's flagship conference is being co-hosted by the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education and the American Educational Research Association. As ever, the event will be tailored to meet the unique needs and interests of journalists who cover education at all levels.
