Message From EWA's Director
Developed in response to dramatic changes in the news industry, EWA’s
innovative public editor service offers journalists an unparalleled
source of customized support to get the story right. Starting this
coming Monday, EWA’s new public editor,
Emily Richmond, will join our team to provide EWA members with free,
confidential help on story development, reporting, writing, and
understanding of the issues. She will resume writing The Educated Reporter blog
and help keep Source Search, EWA's database of experts, up to date. And
she’ll be on EdMedia Commons, our new online community, with regular
features to broaden your knowledge and connect you with resources that
make a difference in your work. Whether you’re scrambling on deadline or
knee-deep in a project, don’t hesitate to reach out to Emily at erichmond@ewa.org.

Ed Media Commons Rollout
The EdMedia Commons invitation period is continuing and is slated to
conclude next week. We’ve been signing up new members continuously over
the past 10 days and are sending out the last wave of invitations early
next week. If you haven’t received yours yet, don’t worry – you should
have it soon.
Once you’re on, you'll find ongoing discussions
about Pell Grant cuts, cheating scandals and a range of other topics.
New content is being added constantly, so bookmark EdMediaCommons.org and come back often!
Fall 2011 Higher Education Seminar
EWA's next Higher Education Seminar will take place November 4-5 at
the University of California, Los Angeles. Approximately 50 higher
education journalists will gather with dozens of newsmakers, scholars,
and other experts to explore a constellation of complex topics in higher
education today.
for event information and to register. EWA offers travel subsidies for
reporters who need assistance to attend our conferences. Please note, this seminar is for working journalists only. Contact Stephanie Cvetetic at scvetetic@ewa.org or 202.677.4271 for more information.
This event is made possible by a grant from the Lumina Foundation. It is sponsored by Pearson and hosted by UCLA.
Latino Ed Beat
To help journalists cover issues affecting Latino children and their schooling, we have just launched Latino Ed Beat, a new website that will serve as a continuously updated resource on young Latinos at every grade level.
New content is being added constantly, but the site is already packed
with information to help you broaden your reporting. Some of the
features include:
•A blog offering guidance on covering Latino children from toddlers to teens
•Reports on demographics and schooling, English-language learners, and early education, among other topics
•Links to important research studies
•News stories from around the country
A
Spanish-language section is also in the works. If you have suggestions
about anything you’d like to see on the site, or if you’d like to give
us feedback, email Lori Crouch at lcrouch@ewa.org.
