Who: Hosted by
the Education Writers Association, UC Berkeley, Stanford's Understanding
Language Initiative, and Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE).
Why: Several
urban districts and some states are quickly translating Common Core
proficiencies into new teaching practices and more complex classroom
activities. This represents a sharp departure from the "basic skills" drilling
experienced by many English-language learners under high-stakes accountability
policies.
This seminar will examine how California is moving forward, with
lessons learned from Florida, looking at local teacher training efforts and
revamping testing regimes. State and district leaders will discuss what's
occurring on the ground. A classroom simulation will be conducted to help you understand the changes that lie ahead for students and educators. You will leave with great story ideas, and the
tools to help you accomplish them.
Space is
limited for this event. We are inviting applications from editors, reporters,
bloggers, and opinion writers who cover education issues—nationally and in
districts and states that are in the midst of reform efforts related to the
Common Core State Standards and English-language learners.
