What if schools look at Latino children as a series of problems and ignore the positive traits they bring to school? What do Latino teens think about education and how to plan their future?
How do reporters cover the education of Latino students and how can they do better?
The Education Writers Association, the Pew Hispanic Center and the National Panel on Latino
Children and Schooling will present a one-day conference Tuesday, Oct. 6 in Washington, DC
looking at these and other issues.
The Pew Hispanic Center will present the findings of a survey of Latino young adults at the
conference, which will be held at the Pew Hispanic Center, 1615 L St NW, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15
p.m. We also plan to bring together federal officials from the US Department of Education and
Health and Human Services to discuss the impact of federal policy on Latino children.
EWA can provide a limited number of fellowships to out-of-town journalists to attend the meeting (one night of hotel and up to
$250 for airfare) if you apply and show why the meeting would be important to your coverage of these issues.
Here is the agenda and the fellowship application
