National Math and Science Initiative Celebrates Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr.’s Induction to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

The honor recognizes Dr. Harris’s contributions to the fields of science, education, and nonprofit leadership

DALLAS (October 11, 2023) – The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) is proud to announce that Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr., a founding board member and former CEO of NMSI, has been inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the area of Leadership, Policy, and Communications, with the specialty of Scientific, Cultural, and Nonprofit Leadership. This prestigious honor recognizes Dr. Harris’s outstanding contributions to the fields of science, education, and nonprofit leadership.

As a physician, business leader, and the first Black astronaut to walk in space, Dr. Harris embodies the benefits and opportunities of STEM education and has been integral to NMSI since its inception. His dedication to advancing STEM education and leadership has left an indelible mark on our organization and the countless students and educators we serve. As a current member of NMSI’s advisory board, Dr. Harris continues to provide invaluable guidance and support to our mission.

Nichole Austion, Vice President of Public Affairs at NMSI, expressed her excitement about Dr. Harris’s induction: “We are immensely proud of Dr. Harris’s accomplishments and unwavering commitment to promoting STEM education. The induction ceremony for Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr. took place September 30, 2023, where he was joined by an esteemed group of individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts, sciences, and public affairs.
